During the 1950s, Camp Gordon was the center of several training outfits including the Military Government Training for the Army, Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, the 51st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade, and the Army’s Signal Officer Candidate School. The Civil Affairs School arrived in 1955. Camp Gordon became a permanent Army installation in 1956 and was designated as Fort Gordon. The U.S. Army Training Center (Basic) began in 1957.
Signal Corps training grew in capacity during the 1960s and, in addition, Fort Gordon trained military police and infantrymen headed to Vietnam. The Army consolidated all communications training to Fort Gordon in 1974 and later added the Army’s Computer Science School, which sparked significant overall growth of Fort Gordon.
During the 1990s, Fort Gordon’s Mobilization Command headed to Operation Desert Shield-Desert Storm and since then has continued to provide cyber technology for today’s continued war efforts in Southeast Asia as well as other global interests.
