MacDill AFB is located within the city limits of Tampa, Florida. It's eight miles south of the central business district at the tip of the Interbay Peninsula. The base has city district status because it is within the city limits of Tampa. Cities within driving distance of the base are Brandon, Valrico, Riverview, and Lithia.

At MacDill, the term “joint" is often used, with two military combatant commands located here: CENTCOM and SOCOM. On the Florida peninsula itself, there are Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard bases. The Florida “Space Coast” and Cape Canaveral are just a few hours away too. Some of the most well-known beaches in the country are nearby, and ports of call for cruise ship lines and the Keys are about a half-day drive or quick flight away.

There are several popular areas that families enjoy near the base, but each has its own personality.
