The base’s host wing is the 56th Fighter Wing, whose mission is to "Train the World's Greatest Fighter Pilots and Combat Ready Airmen." The 56th is the largest fighter wing in the world and the Air Force’s primary active-duty fighter pilot training wing. Luke trains 75% of the world’s F-35 pilots. Since 1941, Luke has graduated over 61,000 pilots. Luke Air Force Base was named for the Phoenix native and first aviator to be awarded the Medal of Honor, 2nd Lt. Frank Luke, Jr.
As part of AETC (Air Education and Training Command), the base is home to 26 squadrons and both F-16 and F-35A aircraft. The 56th Fighter Wing also oversees the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field and the Barry M. Goldwater Range, a military training range that covers more than 1.7 million acres of the Sonoran Desert.
