Vandenberg Space Force Base, previously known as Vandenberg AFB, is the only military installation in the United States from which unmanned government and commercial satellites are launched into polar orbit. Vandenberg is home to the 14th Air Force, 30th Space Wing, 381st Training Group, the Western Launch and Test Range, and elements of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. The base is nicknamed "VandyLand" by Air Force personnel, and was originally established in 1941 as the U.S. Army's Camp Cooke.
